About the Author

Anthony Hope is the pen-name for Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins. He was born in London in 1863, and studied at Marlborough School, and then Balliol College, Oxford. In 1887 Hope began work as a lawyer. He wrote stories in his free time, and in 1890 he published his first novel.
